Just like craft beer, homebrewing has become more and more popular as people discover all of the wonderful possibilities it has to offer.  But before you dive into your first brew, there are a few important things to keep in mind.

1 — Do Your Research

Just by reading this article, you’ve already started to develop good habits.  That’s because relying on the experience of others can go a long way to avoiding common mistakes, especially when just getting started. So congratulations!  By knowing what gear to get, how much it will cost and just exactly what you’re getting, you will save a ton of time and money.  Even as your experience grows, continuing to add to your own knowledge will only help to make your brews that much better.

2 — Trust in the Process
One of the biggest concerns many novice homebrewers have is the prospect of making an undrinkable brew.  But if you do your homework and follow the guidance of experts, you will make decent beer, even your first time.

Will you brew an award winning beer your first time around?  Probably not.  In any case, stick to the tried and true process and you will be able to make something that you can be proud of.

3 —  Keep it Clean

The easiest way to ruin that brewing process and almost guarantee a bad beer is infection.  Ensuring that the right equipment is properly sanitized is essential to maintaining the integrity of your brew.  From the vessel you use for fermentation to the bottles you package it in, everything must be free of any bacteria that can ruin the quality of your beer.  You wouldn’t eat off a dirty plate and you shouldn’t drink from a dirty bottle.

4 —  Be Patient

Even if your first brew turns out better than you expected, you may find that you are only making OK beer for quite a while.  Don’t be discouraged, though!  The brewing process is easy enough to understand but difficult to master.  Any good brewer, from novice to expert, is always learning and improving their craft.  So stay patient, learn from your mistakes and before long you’ll notice that your beer is getting better.

5 —  It’s Just Beer!

Throughout the whole learning process, it’s important to always remember that beer is something that is meant to be enjoyed.  Just as much, homebrewing is something that should be relaxing and bring enjoyment to those who practice it.  Continue to improve and learn what you can but always remember, it’s just beer!
